TLT East Ventures: Investing in New Brunswick AI and Deep Tech

When Sussex-born Michael Brown returned to New Brunswick after more than a decade in Toronto’s investment banking and venture capital world, he saw untapped potential and a clear opportunity. For over 20 years, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) has been a key player in building the province’s startup ecosystem, proving that early-stage capital can work here. But as the number of ambitious startups grows, so too does the need for more early-stage investment to help them scale and succeed.
That realization led to the creation of TLT East Ventures, a new Atlantic Canadian investment group focused exclusively on advanced technology companies in New Brunswick. Michael Brown partnered with business leaders and subject matter experts in the region to create a community-based economic development fund, raising capital from the New Brunswick community to invest directly in promising local advanced technology companies. The fund enables the community to own a stake in high-potential local ventures that are creating the jobs of tomorrow and driving long-term economic growth across the region.
The leadership team behind TLT East includes Gerry Pond (Co-Founder of East Valley Ventures), Marc Savoie (Entrepreneur-in-Residence, East Valley Ventures), Kathryn Lockhart (CEO, Propel ICT), Adrienne Oldford (Executive Director, The McKenna Institute), and Dr. Hanif Chatur (Co-Founder, eVisitNB). “The key to success is to surround yourself with incredible people. It truly takes a village to make it all work”, shares Michael Brown, Founder and Managing Director at TLT East Ventures.
TLT East Ventures makes long-term investments of up to $250K in advanced technology companies such as AI, deep tech and compute, areas Michael Brown sees as both high-potential and underfunded in New Brunswick. The fund is already active, having made three investments with more on the horizon. Their investments include Eigen Innovations, SnapTrade, and Profitual.
“Everybody can benefit from this kind of initiative, other people’s success is our success. And we’ve been missing a capital platform to be able to support innovation like this”, he explains.
With a micro fund in place for pre-seed and seed-stage companies, and plans for a larger Series A fund, TLT East Ventures is aiming to close the funding gap for New Brunswick startups and ultimately help Atlantic Canada compete on the world stage. Michael Brown sees a future where New Brunswick becomes a hub for innovation, especially in artificial intelligence.
“We’re actively pursuing new opportunities for investment in New Brunswick with TLT East Ventures” concludes Michael Brown, “and laying the foundation for future funds to accelerate the region’s next generation of innovation".
