New Indigenous-Led IT Training Program Launched Through Cross-Provincial Partnership

Cree

The Cree School Board (CSB), the Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI), and the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB) have launched a new Indigenous-led professional education program in Information Technology. This program is designed specifically to support Cree learners by offering high-quality training while allowing students to study and work within their own communities.

Developed through a shared commitment to reconciliation, education, and employment, this initiative addresses the growing demand for IT professionals in northern and remote areas. With Indigenous leadership at the core, the program was created to reflect community priorities and build local capacity for long-term success.

Delivered virtually over two years, the training includes five micro-certificates—IT Essentials, IT Intermediate, IT Advanced, IT Specialization, and a final internship tier. Students will also complete in-person internships throughout the program. Upon graduation, Cree learners will earn a recognized college diploma from CCNB, valid in New Brunswick, Quebec, and across Canada.

The first cohort will welcome up to 20 students and includes dedicated academic, cultural, and governance supports. This program not only prepares learners for careers in tech but also serves as a model of Indigenous sovereignty in education.

With scalability in mind, this initiative aims to serve as a template for other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities across the country.
