McKenna Institute Announces Funding for Healthcare Projects with Shoppers Drug Mart

The McKenna Institute at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) has announced funding for five healthcare projects through its collaboration with Shoppers Drug Mart. This partnership, initiated in 2022, aims to create innovative, patient-centric community healthcare solutions and address gaps in healthcare in New Brunswick and across Canada.

Adrienne Oldford, Executive Director of the McKenna Institute, expressed excitement about the partnership's contributions to medical research in New Brunswick. The funded projects are expected to benefit local health and position the province as a leader in digital health care.

Projects include:

  • Research on diabetes and cardiovascular conditions led by Dr. Ted McDonald and Dr. Chris Folkins.
  • A 100-Day Challenge by UNB's Pond-Deshpande Centre to find solutions for healthcare disparities.
  • Evaluation of the Pharmacist Care Clinic Pilot Project to enhance access to primary care and chronic disease management.
  • Expansion of the Truckers’ Health Adaptive Technology Clinic (TH@CLINIC) Project by Dr. Jalila Jbilou at UniversitĂ© de Moncton.
  • Research on the Neurocognitive Frailty Index (NFI) by Dr. Sarah Pakzad at UniversitĂ© de Moncton to improve early detection of cognitive disorders.

Jeff Leger, president of Shoppers Drug Mart, emphasized the goal of improving access to health services, particularly for women and marginalized groups, through this collaboration.
