Dr. Luigi Benedicenti, dean of computer science on the University of New Brunswick’s Fredericton campus, recently appeared in the Telegraph Journal with his commentary highlighting how UNB is leading New Brunswick’s digital transformation.

The commentary, published on July 16, speaks to how computer science and digital technology are becoming more pervasive in society and how those changes are moving our lives forward.

UNB has long been involved in the advancement of technology. The faculty of computer science in Fredericton was the first such faculty in Canada, and the university has been studying and teaching computing sciences for more than 50 years. The faculty is also looking to the future and putting its ambitious plans into action to support the digital future.

“We are part of the long-term solution to meet demands for a significantly expanded digital workforce in New Brunswick, the Atlantic region, Canada and beyond. We want to help reduce pressure on an extremely tight labour market by graduating work-ready, highly skilled graduates seeking interesting careers in tech. What’s more, we want to be part of addressing, through digital approaches, critical issues facing our communities and our world,” Dr. Benedicenti wrote.

Dr. Benedicenti says it’s crucial to care about digital transformation, as it will better position New Brunswick’s people and businesses to grow, adapt and overcome societal challenges.

“UNB has an incredible vision that we are turning into reality, and the faculty of computer science is truly energized by the digital transformation we find ourselves in,” said Dr. Benedicenti. “My commentary speaks to some of the countless exciting initiatives we and our partners are working on to expand our research capabilities, address the labour shortage and create opportunities for New Brunswick.”
