The University of New Brunswick College of Extended Learning (UNB CEL), the McKenna Institute and TechImpact have announced the launch of an online Coding Boot Camp designed to help prepare learners for the surging number of available positions in the IT sector and workforce.

The UNB Coding Boot Camp will help meet the demand for tech talent in Atlantic Canada, providing training in the skills employers seek, tuition support for those in need, and career development support to help participants get ready for local tech jobs.

The program gives learners the skills needed to fill in-demand professional roles, such as full-stack developer, QA and tester, application developer, web developer and more.

The curriculum takes a deep dive into the basics of coding and data structure. Participants get hands-on experience with the applications and programs used by developers and will have a chance to build a professional portfolio to share with future employers.

To ensure that the Coding Boot Camp is accessible to equity-deserving cohorts of learners, eligible candidates can access tuition support through the McKenna Institute at UNB.

"This program opens the door for individuals in New Brunswick who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to participate in the digital economy and the digitally enabled workplace," says Adrienne O’Pray, executive director of the McKenna Institute.

The Government of New Brunswick also has funding available for individuals looking to boost their skills and employers who want to retain new talent in coding/development.

The need for new training was highlighted in a recent five-year growth plan for New Brunswick's IT workforce, produced by TechImpact and Jupia Consultants, at the request of the Province of New Brunswick.

”The report found critical steps were needed to ensure New Brunswick has the skilled digital workforce that the evolving economy needs. It also found that a wave of skilled IT positions needs to be filled in the coming years,” says Cathy Simpson, CEO of TechImpact and co-author of the NB IT Workforce Growth Plan.

The Coding Boot Camp is offered in partnership with 2U, Inc. (Nasdaq: TWOU) and is the first in a series of professional tech boot camps offered by the university. Plans are underway to offer data analytics and cybersecurity boot camps to meet the intense labour market demand in these areas.

The University of New Brunswick joins leading universities from across the globe in launching boot camps aimed at directly preparing professionals for in-demand tech careers.
