Inside the Girls Step Up! Program: Aanya Gupta's Story

I am a high school student from an Asian background where education is mostly focused on theoretical studies and grades with little to no emphasis on extracurricular activities. However, moving to a Canadian education system, I saw that extracurriculars are almost as important as learning from a textbook and that leadership is a highly valued skill here. Despite this, I didn’t even know where to start building my skills. Then last year, I found out about ‘Girls Step Up!’, an amazing 8-week program that aims to equip high school girls with the necessary tools to enter fields of STEM.

So what did I learn, you ask? Only everything I would need to know to be able to be successful. One of the most insightful things I learned was the difference between habits and goals. I thought I already knew it, but it turned out there was much more to it. I also gained valuable knowledge about having a growth mindset, the different fields of technology, FOPO, and the charms and harms of social media. Through the program, I also discovered more about myself such as what lights my fire, my strengths and passions, and my personality type. These and all the other things I was exposed to are not only useful for getting into a good university but will also be helpful throughout my life.

I also met many inspiring women from different fields of STEM who shared their experiences and provided valuable advice on how to succeed in their respective fields. This program was not just about learning skills specific to STEM careers but also about developing important life skills essential for success in any field. I learned how to communicate effectively, present myself confidently, and think critically. These skills have already proven to be useful in my daily life, and I know they will continue to benefit me in my future endeavors.

Women have historically been underrepresented in STEM fields, and this has resulted in a significant loss of talent and potential. Gender inclusivity in STEM is crucial because it ensures that all voices are heard and that diverse perspectives are brought to the table when solving problems and creating innovations. When girls and women are not encouraged to pursue STEM careers, it limits the overall progress of the field in addition to limiting career options for us. Girls Step Up! is making a difference by providing girls with the necessary tools and resources to pursue STEM careers and take charge of our futures.

The program also provides us with role models and mentors who can help guide us on our journeys. Girls Step Up! is helping to create a more gender-inclusive STEM community, one that recognizes and values the contributions of women. They are helping to create a brighter future for everyone.

Overall, I highly recommend the Girls Step Up! program to any high schooler who identifies as female and is interested in pursuing a career in STEM or just wants to develop valuable life skills. It is an amazing opportunity to learn, grow, and meet inspiring women who are making a difference in their fields. So don't hesitate and miss out on this life-changing opportunity. Take the first step towards a brighter future and join Girls Step Up! today!
